Concept of the Program
Model United Nations (MUN) is an academic simulation of the United Nations that aims to educate participants about current issues, topics in international relations, diplomacy, formal session’s current political, social and economic issues and the United Nations agenda.
However, the concept of MUN is growing in Afghanistan, but due to lack of understanding of Rules of Procedure, research methods, debating and negotiation skills, leadership and organizational skills, Afghan youth are facing problems. Afghan youth lacks understanding of the world and local issues. Additionally, lack of tolerance makes it very hard for them to accept or listen to each other. Model UN will be a great platform for them to improve their understanding and give them the space to listen to their co-partners and learn from them.
In order to make Model United Nations conferences more effective, Youth Thinkers’ Society Organization (YTSO) would like to engage youth in Model United Nations trainings and programs from all across Afghanistan.
YTSO is proposing to establish MUN clubs throughout Afghanistan with the MUN for Afghanistan program. There will be a series of Model United Nations conferences and trainings in five different provinces of Afghanistan. It aims to transcend barriers, rally youth voices and engage universities into engines of change. YTSO will be focusing on university students and will encourage them to participate and enhance their capacity, especially in the areas of debating, diplomacy and lobbying. Moreover, this conference will attempt to create a platform for Afghan youth, from 4 provinces to connect and work together in the future. Firstly, we will select provinces and universities and organize a series of workshops along with one conference in each province. Secondly, we will invite top delegates from each of 4 provinces to Kabul and will organize one main conference for all 4 provinces. These conferences, following the main roles and procedures of MUN would also promote the culture of tolerance. It will also serve as a powerful forum for the participants to learn, share and inspire ideas from one another. This conference will motivate Afghan youth to think critically, be innovative and suggest solutions for problems existing in the society
